Winter 2021 Leadership Development Courses

This winter, there are many ways to lead and make an impact through WIN. You can show our people power when called upon to turnout to a big action- right from your living room, or write an email, meet with an public official. You can grow our power together by engaging new leaders. Or, you can grow our power through organizing money in the form of member dues or individual donors. May WIN be a vehicle for you to make your voice heard and make an impact in the world in 2021. 

We want to hear from you about how you want to lead, grow and learn with WIN in early 2021. PLEASE FILL OUT THE SURVEY!!!


This winter we also invite you to consider investing more deeply in your own learning and leadership through committing to one of the WIN 2021 COURSES IN LEADERSHIP. 

COURSE 1:  BUILDING YOUR DREAM TEAM:

COURSE 1: BUILDING YOUR DREAM TEAM 

Building people power in your community institutions and organizations through the skills of relational organizing. 

  • Do you want to keep your congregation/ community connected during this winter and beyond? 
  • Are you feeling burnt out – and want to revitalize your team? 
  • Do you want to build your activities around where there is energy and passion and talent? 
  • Do you want to build public relationships that have the potential to make a powerful impact in the world? 

Skills/ Learnings: Tool of 1-1 relational meetings with potential team members. Reflect on your goals, self interest and your community leadership. Reflect on how to engage and choose potential team members around their goals, self interest and leadership. Inviting your team. Bringing your team together to act. 

Classroom: 4 Sessions 

Tuesday Jan 12th 7-8:30pm, (1 hour to 90 minutes) 

Tuesday Jan 26th 7-8pm  (45 minutes  or 1 hour) 

Tuesday Feb 9th 7-8pm (45 minutes  or 1 hour) 

Tuesday Feb 23rd 7-8:30pm (1 hour to 90 minutes) 

Homework: 20-30 minutes of reflection/ writing and reading before each session. 

Reflection will be on your leadership, biography, your organization or congregation and the people with whom you are meeting,  

Community work: Schedule and have 5+ relational meetings with members of your congregation and community between Jan 12th and Feb 23rd. 

Each relational meeting will take between 30 minutes – 1 hour plus the time to set up the meetings 

Cost/ Tuition: Free to members of WIN congregations. Donations, welcome but not required. Please reach out if you are not a WIN member to discuss attendance

COURSE 2: GET INTO THE DRIVER’S SEAT OF ORGANIZING 

Action/ Reflection Cohorts. Both Practicum/ Apprenticeship & Classroom 

-Are you a WIN leader who has participated in larger actions but has not yet taken the opportunity to get up close to lead a campaign? 

-Are you a more experienced WIN leader who wants to do some more reflecting and digesting about what you are learning along the way? 

-Do you want to learn by doing and reflecting about how to build power & drive campaigns?

-Do you want to act and learn with a cohort of interesting leaders from around the District? 


Description: Help drive and lead a key part of a current WIN campaign. You won’t be in it alone – you will apprentice while guided by a WIN organizer or journeyman veteran leaders and a larger team.  We will also break out the larger team of leaders working on the campaign into smaller cohorts of about 5-10 years. You will have the opportunity to get to know your cohort, reflect about what you are learning in the classroom and in action. 

Skills/ Learnings: Learn about power universals through the campaign experience and classroom learning. The concepts lifted up will depend on the campaign but could include concepts such as: Building campaigns around leaders, not just issues, and bringing new power to a campaign. Using action to get a reaction. Power analysis, getting to the bottom of who makes decisions, & how to influence decisions. How to “cut an issue” and turn problems into winnable issues. Bringing new power to a campaign, engaging new leaders. Race, socio-economics  and power. How to do a 1-1 relational meeting. Spiritual grounding and learning through action. 

Commitment: When we sign up we make a commitment to our cohorts from mid-January through March. See specifics for the campaigns below. 

Classroom: 4 60 minute zoom classes. Specific dates below 

Community work: 5-15 hours. Participate in planning, engaging other leaders,, engaging decision makers, and leading actions on particular campaigns. We estimate this will entail approximately 5-15 hours of volunteer hours, depending on the campaign, and the size of the team, and the size of the role you choose to play. 

Home reflection work:  20-30 minutes per class of  reflection, writing and reading about the organizing universals involved in the campaign, and your personal leadership journey.

COURSE 2 TRACK A: GET IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT- PUBLIC LANDS TRACK 

PUBLIC LANDS – Reservation 13/ Hill East & RFK 

The District has a request for proposals out for developers to develop parcels. It includes some requirements for housing affordability. We want to encourage developers to maximize affordability. We also want to encourage the District to choose the developers who maximize affordability and provide the best plan for the District. There is also a possibility that the Federal government could be open to turning the land RFK stadium is on over the District making way for development. If this becomes a possibility this team will be a part of analyzing whether it is possible to engage allies. 


This Public Lands action apprenticeship cohort will: 

-Work to set up meetings with developers and encourage them to maximize affordability. 

-Review the developer responses to the RFP and make clear WIN’s preferred proposals. 

-Organize power and actions around WIN’s proposals. Actions could include: press conferences, actions with councilmembers, etc. 

-Organize more power for the campaign by encouraging new leaders and allies to participate in the campaign. 

Proposed classroom times:  Jan 7th 6:45-7pm , Jan 21 6:45-7pm , Feb 11th, and 1 other evening in March To be determined depending on the status of the campaign.

COURSE 2: TRACK B: GET IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT: GOOD JOBS LEGISLATION 

WIN’s 2020-2021 Corporate Accountability/Racial Equity (CARE) Campaign aims to push Pepco and other utilities, and their contractors and subcontractors, to train and hire more residents from Wards 5, 7 and 8 into family-sustaining jobs via the DC Infrastructure Academy and union-sponsored training & apprenticeship programs; allocate more contracting to Black businesses and create a capital fund to speed development of Black business; and advance environmental safety and green energy. The DC Public Service Commission regulates DC utilities.  The Mayor appoints members to the PSC, and the Council oversees it. 

The CARE Jobs action apprenticeship cohorts will do some or all of the following:

 -Help lead and do turnout for meetings with councilmembers

-Build allies for the campaign in the area of good jobs and green power

-Teach congregations and allies about the importance of good jobs in the energy sector 

Some cohort members also will work on building a jobs recruitment pipeline to:

-Work to recruit potential workers for the 100-120 jobs for DC residents in Pepco pipeline . 

-Work with WIN member congregations and organizations to recruit candidates for good paying Pepco infrastructure jobs. 

-Work with candidates to identify the barriers for employment and potential ways to organize to create systems to overcome the barriers. 

-Organize for funding from DC Department of Employee Services for the needed stipends

Thursday January 28th 6:45-7:45

Thursday February 25th 6:45-7:45pm 

March 11th 6:45-7:45 

4th course TBD depending on the course of the campaign 

COURSE 3 TRACK C GET IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT:

GREEN / HEALTHY/ AFFORDABLE BUILDINGS TRACK

This team will:

-work at the ground-floor of building a concrete campaign to address climate change, housing affordability, and getting our ear to the ground about the possible coming eviction crisis in the district. 

-connect with building owners, institutional building owners- such as congregations –  and tenants to learn about what it would take to green the heating, air-conditioning and energy of their buildings, while keeping the buildings affordable. 

-do some combination of: 

-Meet with building owners, nonprofit and for profit , meet with hundreds 

-Do a power analysis of the current landscape of subsidy and financing available to green buildings and keep them affordable. 

-Do a power analysis of Washington Gas as a key player around fossil fuels in the region. 

-Do 1-1 and listening sessions to build power at the intersection of acting on the issues of climate change, housing affordability, and good jobs for the future. 

-Inquire about eviction rates and ways to avoid eviction. 

Proposed Course Times:
We are assessing the level of interest for this course – and the times.  

Might a lunchtime breaktime  of 45 minutes on one day of the week work? Perhaps Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays?
