Even before summer officially began, we kicked things off with a Healthy Homes Celebration in River Terrace. Residents, community leaders, and allies gathered to celebrate the passage of the historic Healthy Homes Act. This legislation will:create a program to electrify 30,000 low- and moderate-income homes—taking a big step toward energy efficiency and affordability in D.C. The June 27th celebration marked the success of three years of collective organizing that made this victory possible.
Jazz Fundraiser for WIN:
We kicked off the summer with a Jazz fundraiser for WIN, hosted by our member congregation Friends Meeting of Washington. The event was filled with great music by the talented MJP Power Trio, who captivated us with their incredible jazz performances. Thanks to your generosity, we exceeded our $15,000 fundraising goal by $5,627! With the matching grant of $15,000 from the All Souls Beckner Fund, we raised a grand total of $35,627.
Undesign the Redline
Our WIN Ward 3 team organized alongside allies to bring Undesign the Redline DC exhibition to the Upper Northwest. On June 25, WIN co-hosted a panel with Antiracist DC that focused on envisioning thriving, inclusive communities in D.C. Our Executive Director, Alison Dunn-Almaguer, was featured alongside WIN Strategy Team leader and then founder of the TraRon Center Rev. Ryane Nickens and other key leaders like Erica Williams of DCFPI, and Abel Núñez of CARECEN. Moderated by Kimberly Perry from DC Action, the panel explored how racial and economic displacement is shaping Ward 3, and discussed ways to shift away from exclusionary practices. The interactive exhibition ran from April 11 to July 27.
Public Safety & Community Building at Tyler House & Rise in the NW1 neighborhood
We want to give a special shoutout to the Holy Redeemer Catholic WIN core team for their work this summer around public safety and community building. After doing a series of listening and relational meetings around their church in Northwest One, they identified that parents and children both wanted safe and accessible places for kids to play. In response, the team successfully applied for funding from the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, allowing them to support youth and family programs throughout August at Tyler House and Rise at Temple Courts, two local affordable housing properties. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the community room was filled with energy as youth engaged in fitness classes led by Jaliyla Tillman and practiced conflict resolution skills through fun games and art with Little Friends for Peace DC.By combining community organizing with direct service, WIN and Holy Redeemer created a safe, welcoming environment for kids to enjoy their summer while building trust and strengthening community bonds.
