WIN IN ACTION

WIN’s organizing wins concrete change for DC communities. Here are some of our recent victories and the media coverage of our work.

Recent Victories

Passed the Healthy Homes Act

After years of organizing to merge climate action with housing affordability, WIN won passage of the Healthy Homes Act in 2024—allowing 30,000 DC homeowners to retrofit their homes with all-electric appliances at no cost. WIN also fought to restore $10 million for the Sustainable Energy Trust Fund and published a citizen science study showing 77% of DC kitchens exceeded EPA air quality standards. The Act lowers utility bills, improves air quality, and builds generational wealth for low and middle-income families.

Reformed the Secure DC Crime Bill

Working through the Crimnbus Coalition, WIN successfully reformed harmful provisions in the Secure DC Omnibus Crime Bill while preserving critical violence intervention programs. WIN’s organizing—centering those most impacted by violence—limited DNA collection to post-conviction, enhanced expungement access, and protected youth from expanded detention. WIN also fought to maintain funding for emergency housing for violence victims, hospital-based intervention services, and ONSE programs that prioritize public health approaches to safety.

Won $10 Million Black Homeownership Fund

Through the BETH (Black Equity Through Homeownership) campaign, WIN organized Black and Native Washingtonians to push the Mayor’s office and won creation of a $10 million Black Homeownership Fund and a Black Homeownership Strike Force. WIN successfully advocated for community representation on the Strike Force, which published recommendations to create 20,000 net new Black homeowners by 2030. In 2024, WIN knocked on 150+ doors connecting families to home repair resources while organizing for policy change.
